Summary
of Organisation’s Activities
It
operates in the five major areas in which all the Basel Convention
Centres have mandate to operate namely: Training, Technology
Transfer, Information, Consulting and Awareness.
Activities
for year 2003/2004 include the following:

Dioxin
and Furans National Training Workshops (Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt
and Lagos, Nigeria 2003);

Regional
Workshop on Successful Case Studies of Recycling, Reuse and
Resource Recovery Methods Towards the Environmentally Sound
Management of Hazardous Wastes and Implementation of the Basel
Convention in Africa (Ibadan, Nigeria, 9-12 August 2004);

Regional
Consultations with BCRCs (Abuja, Nigeria);

Capacity-Building
Workshop on Toxic Chemicals Tracking, Hazardous Waste Management
and Enforcement for Senior Policy Officials, Customs, Port
Officers, Security Agencies, Judicial Officers and Decision
Makers (Lagos, Nigeria, November 2004);
-
Implementation
of Waste Minimization and Cleaner Production in Manufacturing
Industries and Petroleum Sector (Port Harcourt, Nigeria,
rescheduled for 2005);
-
Workshop
on Remediation of Sites Contaminated by POPs and Oil (Port
Harcourt, Nigeria, rescheduled for 2005);
-
First
Meeting of the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on Used Oil in
Africa (planned in Cairo, Egypt 2004,
October 2004).
Past
activities have focused on the recycling of hazardous wastes as part
of the promotion of
"Waste to Wealth Program" of
the Centre.
Future
Activities Planned include: Training and dissemination of
information related to clean production technologies: electronic
network of hazardous waste data, resources and information;
protocols for monitoring and advising on illegal traffic on
hazardous waste: harmonization of hazardous waste classification and
labeling procedure; and regional laboratory network to coordinate
quality control procedure in hazardous waste analysis, and to
develop testing criteria and methods.
